Volunteer at MSC

MSC needs volunteers for its Federal Way Food Bank to help us provide essential resources to individuals and families in need of supplemental food. We also need volunteers for the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program to help ensure the rights of residents in Long-Term Care Facilities are protected. We are currently not accepting volunteer applications for other programs at this time.

Opportunities with Food Bank Market:

The Food Bank Market offers several programs and tasks performed may vary depending on which programs are running on the day you volunteer. Volunteers may  help with food distribution ”market style” which includes loading food on tables and assisting clients with their food choices as they come through the indoor market, packing boxes with food and loading the boxes into cars for our home delivery program, sorting donated food, as well as general organizing and cleaning. Food bank volunteer shifts are generally three hours Monday through Friday.

We also need drivers and driver’s helpers to pick up donations from local stores Monday through Friday in the mornings and early afternoon. Drivers and driver’s helpers commit to at least six months, must have a clean driving record and take part in a short interview with the Food Bank for those positions. MSC provides the vehicle and route schedules.

All positions volunteer positions in the food bank require that you dress appropriately for the weather as you may spend time inside or outside.  These positions also require the ability to lift up to 35 pounds, standing, and side to side turning among other physical movements.

All volunteers must complete an application online at https://mschelps.org/getinvolved/volunteer/application/ and have a background check completed prior to volunteering. Once your application has been processed and approved, you will receive an email welcoming you to the program that includes a link to sign up for volunteer shifts. Application processing and approval generally takes two to three business days. If you have specific questions about volunteering in the food bank, please email our Food Bank Volunteer Coordinator.

Opportunities with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program: This volunteer opportunity requires extensive training and a long-term commitment. Please visit the volunteer page at www.waombudsman.org. call 206-623-0816 or email [email protected] for more information.
