“This was the only place that would accept me with rent I could afford,” shares twenty-six-year old Cheyenne.
Just over two years ago, Cheyenne’s parents gave her and her then two-year-old daughter Paisley a deadline to find a new place to live. After six months of searching and feeling like she and her daughter were “homeless with housing,” Cheyenne found Mansard Estates, one of MSC’s affordable housing properties located in Auburn.
“They said they were sending me some paperwork and I thought I was still in the application process,” said Cheyenne. “Then, I found out I was approved and I started crying. I love that this is a small complex. I know most of my neighbors and we feel connected. We are protective of each other.”
When Cheyenne and her daughter first moved out, she only had a part-time job. She has since found full-time work and is also still working part-time on the weekends. Her parents help her out by watching their granddaughter or if there is an unexpected expense. Cheyenne is also able to supplement by visiting local food banks and utilizing MSC’s energy assistance program.
“Honestly, I’m thankful for this opportunity. I might be an adult, but I didn’t really know how to adult,” shares Cheyenne. “Mansard allowed me the opportunity to explore opportunities with freedom and independence. My daughter has her own bedroom and we have our own space.”
“My hope is to continue to grow,” says Cheyenne. “I want to be someone my daughter can look up to. I’d like to get into a house with a yard so we can put out a small pool. And I want my place at Mansard to open up to give someone else the same opportunity I had.”
