Brian* lived without a place to call home for two years before moving into MSC’s Burien Veterans House. Like many in our community, Brian faced significant barriers to stable housing including crushing debt, ongoing mental health struggles, and the overwhelming weight of trying to rebuild with limited support. Every door seemed to close before he even had a chance to step through it.

When he came to MSC and met with our staff, he needed more than just a housing referral — he needed a team that would stand with him, advocate for him, and believe in his future. Through careful collaboration and persistence, MSC staff were able to connect him with the HUD-VASH program, providing him not only with permanent supportive housing but also with the case management and mental health support that would help him truly heal.

Today, Brian is permanently housed. He recently moved into a safe, stable home in the exact neighborhood he had been hoping for, close to community resources and supports that are essential for his well-being. “With your help, I actually feel human again,” said Brian.

Brian’s story reminds us that with the right support, even what feels like the biggest barriers can be overcome and every person deserves the opportunity to reclaim their life.

MSC recently received funding to help Veterans navigate systems to find the help they need. The Veterans Systems Navigation Program is focused on providing support and resources for homeless Veterans like Brian and is funded through the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy. This new program works in tandem with our existing Veteran-focused housing programs, William J. Wood Veterans House and Burien Veterans House, to ensure that our Veterans have the resources and support they need to find stability and achieve their goals.
